Bacopa

One of my personal favorite perennials here at Myrtle Creek is Sutera cordata, commonly known as Bacopa.

Bacopa is a South African perennial that that we use here in the southwest in a small scale groundcover or in containers.

It works great in hanging baskets and planters as a blooming accent that cascades over the edges with beautiful blooms. One example is: at the San Diego County Fair this year they featured Bacopa being used in a planted fountain, cascading over the sides, which gave the effect of water spilling over the 3 tiers of bowls. Bacopa is well known for its prolific white blooms, but it also can be found in light pink and lavender colors too. It blooms real heavy in spring and summer, but in our climate it actually flowers year- round. It does fine in full sun to part shade, however, in the desert I would recommend part shade for the hot afternoon hours. It’s cold hardy to 30 degrees, and stays low growing from 6-8” tall and up to 36” wide.

Here at Myrtle Creek, we have found Bacopa to be a great constant bloomer that loves our sandy decomposed granite soil and is one of the few plants that can grow under our Eucalyptus trees.
