Growing blueberries in Southern CaliforniaJanuary: Plant of the month: Blueberries

You do not have to garden in the North to grow great Blueberries.

Here at Myrtle Creek, we have found many varieties that produce very well in our warm- winter climate, especially, the Southern Highbush varieties.

One of our favorite varieties here is the Sunshine Blue Blueberry. This variety is very adaptable, it can grow in desert climates of the south, all the way North to Seattle.

The plant itself has a compact branching habit so it requires little pruning and grows to just 3’ tall. In the Spring it blooms with showy pink flowers that fade to white and remain in bloom for quite a while. After the flowers set the plant produces a large crop of dime sized delicious blueberries. The bush usually yields fruit for a span of about nine months in the summer, so you won’t miss-out on them.

The Sunshine Blue Blueberry tolerates a higher ph than most blueberries, so it does well in our alkaline soils here in the South. It has a low chilling requirement (150 hours of temperatures below 45 degrees), and is also very cold hardy, so it does well almost anywhere in our southern climate. The Sunshine blue is self-fertile, so you do not need another plant for pollinization. It does great anywhere in your garden or in a pot. Consider using them as an ornamental because of the beautiful blooms.

Also look for other Southern Highbush varieties, such as the Jewel, O’Neal or Misty Blueberry.
