Boysenberries

All Boysenberries trace their roots to Knott’s Berry Farm in Anaheim, California.

In the late 1920’s, Walter Knott was taken to an abandoned farm by a U.S.D.A. representative that had heard of a new berry that had been developed in the area. The farm had belonged to Rudolph Boysen, who developed the berry by crossing Loganberry, with Red Raspberry and Blackberry.

Walter found a few surviving plants in the dry weeds of the farm and brought them to his farm and nurtured them back to health.

Walter sold the berries, made pie and jam at his berry farm with huge success. The farm became famous because of that berry Walter named after the farmer that developed it.

How to Take care of your boysenberry:

Don’t prune the first year.

Prune the tips of new growth during the next summer. Keep the canes at 3 feet.

Right after harvest, heavily prune. Remove dead, broken and hanging branches. Cut-back all older canes so that the new growth will form on the new canes.Tie- up or trellis after pruning. Spread the canes to maximize sunlight. Top-prune the canes that go above your trellis or wire support.
