CyclamenNovember: Plant of the month: Cyclamen

The best blooming winter plant in the Southwest is the Cyclamen. In the Victorian era, the Cyclamen was the plant of choice during the Christmas Holiday, and is making a comeback in popularity.

Cyclamen persicum, also known as Florist’s Cyclamen is in the Primrose family and is native to Europe and North Africa. It blooms in shades of Red, Pink, Lavender and White in the Fall and Winter. The foliage is very attractive with white marbling on the upper sides of the leaves.

Cyclamen is often grown indoors as a houseplant and does well if it is kept in a cool area with plenty of light. Outdoors, the Cyclamen does great in the full to part shade. It likes cool temperatures and needs to be protected from over-watering. Make sure that the plant doesn’t get planted too deep and that the crown of the plant is at the same level as the surrounding soil, or even a little higher. This will protect it from crown rot.

Cyclamen can be treated as a perennial in our climate, but it will go dormant in the Summer. The cyclamen has a tuberous root, and that root is its energy storage. In the summer, the plant will stop blooming, turn yellow and wilt. If the plant is left alone and kept on the dry side it often comes back to life in the Fall when the weather cools down.

Add some Cyclamen to your garden this Fall, especially for showy holiday color!
