Descanso Lilacs
The Descanso Lilac was hybridized at Southern California’s Descanso Gardens. They were developed to provide the beautiful blooms and scent that other common, or mountain type lilacs are famous for, but will survive and perform much better in mild winter climates.
These Lilacs favor a well drained neutral or slightly alkaline soil. They bloom on
second-
It is best to prune the Lilac immediately after bloom. Cut back the branches about 40% to the nearest set of leaves. New growth will form, and by next spring that growth will be the second year growth that will provide flowers.
Once the Lilac is well established, (3 or more years), remove the oldest branches clear down to the base of the plant. This will help new branches grow from the base of the plant, allowing for more blooms in future years.
The main thing to remember is DO NOT OVERWATER. These are large shrubs with deep roots that like deep, but infrequent watering. In the Summer, water about once a week, once every two weeks in the Spring.
The Descanso Lilac takes a little patience, careful watering and a little pruning to be a stunning addition to your garden.
