Fall Colors in Southern CaliforniaPlanting for Fall Color

Fall is rapidly approaching, and although our southern climate is not well known for Fall color, we do have plant selections here that provide a great show.

As trees go, my favorites are the Liquidambar and the Chinese Pistache. The Liquidambar styraciflua, also known as the American Sweet Gum, is a tall growing deciduous tree with a somewhat maple- shaped leaf. The foliage of the Liquidambar turns a combination of reds, burgundies and yellows- Unless it’s a grafted variety that is more specific to color. (Such as Palo Alto- Red or Burgundy- Burgundy).  The Chinese Pistache (Botanical Name Pistachia chinensis) is a much smaller growing tree with a compact shape. The Pistache turns a bright red with a contrast of yellow leaves beneath.

Other trees to consider are Ginkgo, Japanese Maple, Sycamore and Crepe Myrtle.

Remember to bring fall color in to your garden with the use of shrubbery too. My favorite is the Southern Highbush Blueberry. These Blueberry varieties fruit well in the low-chill climate of the southwest and remain compact and well kept in the garden. They turn fabulous red and yellow colors in the Fall. Also consider Cotoneasters, Barberry and Heavenly Bamboo.

Try these varieties, and bring the color of Autumn to your garden.
