January’s Southern California Gardening Tips

One of the most exciting and fun things about gardening is planning your garden--and January is the perfect time to start. Gathering information about new plants, making notes of spaces in your garden you want to spice up, creating a new look and adding features can be worked out on paper. It’s a good time to start seedlings if you plan to start plants from seeds, and a good time in Southern California, to tidy up garden equipment if you haven’t already done so.

Leaves & Lawns
If you have a cool season lawn (bluegrass, rye grass for fescues), you can mow it and keep it a bit shorter than you do in the warm season. Raking up wet leaves really helps keep the chance of fungus and disease down.

Indoor Winter Plants
Indoor plants don’t need a lot of water or fertilizer right now, but they do need as much light as possible.

Bulbs
You can plant bulbs for spring time blooms, if you have pre-chilled them - hyacinths, crocus and tulips are good choices.

Fruit Trees
Prune deciduous fruit trees and roses (if you are in a warm region).

Perennials
This is a good time to divide and replant perennials, but try not to disturb the soil too much. When soil is wet and you dig in it, it can compact, so when planting, gently crumble the soil on top of the plants.

Annuals
If you’re the type that wants to get an early start on all that great spring color, this is a good time to plant seeds indoors for early blooming annuals. You can still add cool season annuals to bare spots in your garden, too.

Trees and Shrubs
It’s a good time to trim back late summer and fall blooming trees and shrubs. Pruning shrubs and trees to get rid of frost damage can be tricky, especially if they are flowering varieties. Make sure to watch for newly forming buds so you don’t take them off. It’s always best to wait until you are sure all possibility of frost is past. It is a good time to prune evergreens. This is a good time to plant container grown trees and shrubs. If you see any disease in the plants you are pruning, use rubbing alcohol on the blades of your pruning shears before moving to the next plant. Remember pruning is about removing branches that are crowding or crossed and blocking the sunshine and airflow.

Vegetables
If you are into seedlings, this is a good time to plant seeds indoors for your warm season veggies. Keep harvesting your outdoor cool season crops to keep production up. You can plant bare root fruits and vegetables as soon as they become available.
