Lavender

The lavenders (Lavandula) are a group of flowering plants in the mint family, originally coming from Cape Verde and Canary Islands, and Madeira across Africa, the Mediterranean, South-West Asia, Arabia, Western Iran and South-East India. The plants can be annuals, herbaceous plants, and small shrubs. Since lavender cross pollinates easily, there are countless variations within the species. The leaves are long and narrow in most species, in others they can be toothed or pinnate. The flowers bloom in whorls, held on spikes that shoot out above the foliage. Flowers can be violet, blue or lilac.

The flowers are often used in dried flower arrangements, the flowers and buds used in potpourris, seeds can be used in pillows for headaches, and dried leaves have been used in sealed pouches to give clothing a fresh fragrances and to deter moths.

It is also great as an herbal tea and an essential oil. Lavender also produces a lot of nectar which bees make into a high quality honey. Lavender is also used in baked goods and desserts and pairs will with chocolate.

Lavenders are tough plants that love dry, sunny and rocky gardens. A lean soil encourages a higher concentration of oils where an alkaline soil will enhance the lavender fragrance. It is a drought resistant plant and should be pruned in spring to encourage new growth and keep the plants from becoming leggy. Lavenders do not like excessive moisture and dampness, so make sure your soil drains well.
