Wisteria

It’s the time of year that you can see Wisteria vines blooming across the Southwest.

You’ll see them in blue, pink, purple and white colors with flowers dangling in long 1 ft. clusters.

Wisteria is a full- sun, deciduous plant that can thrive in any soil that has good drainage- in any climate in the West. Remember to give the roots plenty of room or plant it in a barrier, because they are invasive. They will grow as a vine with support, or can be trained as a tree, or left to ramble on the ground as a groundcover.

The most common are the Chinese varieties. The best blooming are the named varieties propagated usually by buds or grafts. These varieties start blooming in the first year or two, whereas a seedling may take 15 years to start blooming.

Our favorite variety here at Myrtle Creek is the Cooke’s Special Purple. With those we can get blooms 2 months after we plant them from bare-root. They have fabulous 20” long clusters of purplish-blue flowers.

I like the wisteria best for use as a vine to grow on a patio cover or arbor. In the Spring, you have beautiful flowers hanging over the patio, in the Summer the foliage will shade the patio from the hot sun, and in the winter the canopy goes bare to let in the warm sun.
