At Myrtle Creek we like to stay on the “cutting edge” of the perennial scene. We are fortunate to be located near Euro America Propagators in Bonsall, California, the world- wide developer of perennials known as “Proven Winners”. “Proven Winners” and “Proven Selections are perennials that have been developed and tested to be absolutely the best varieties for our area.

Perennials

Agapanthus ‘Storm Cloud’ (Storm Cloud Lily-of-the-Nile) Deep blue-violet blooms on 3’-4’ stems. Full-sun to part shade, handles wet or dry soil conditions, tolerates poor soils, very drought tolerant. Use in mass plantings, good near pools or as a superb container plant.

 

 

 

Bulbine (Bulbinella) Yellow flowers on 4” to 6” spikes tear-round. Full sun, likes well-drained soil. Very drought tolerant, good bank groundcover.

Canna Lily (Canna X generalis) Colorful flowers on tall spikes all summer long. Some varieties have colored and striped foliage. Plant in full-sun to part shade. Use as a cut-flower, and it’s great as a large background planting.

 

 

 

Coleus  (Solenostemon) Very colorful foliage accent for full to part sun locations. Excellent for use as a border planting, containers, and baskets.

 

 

Crossandra infundibuliformis ‘Tropic Flame’(Firecracker Flower) This summer blooming perennial handles the full-sun heat of summer. It can be used for container gardens, window boxes and hanging baskets. The Tropic Flame can also be used outdoors as a 2’-3’ tall flowering shrub. –Use it in a hot spot!

 


 

Flax (Phormium tenax) Large strap-shaped leaves, many varieties are colored bronze, variegated or striped. Sizes varies by variety, some can be 8’ tall, other types 2’ tall. Grows best in full sun, very drought tolerant. Excellent for hillside plantings and dry creeks.

 

 

 

Geranium Incanum Deep pink cup-shaped flowers in spring and summer. Bushy grey-green foliage, spreads as groundcover. Requires full sun to part shade, very drought tolerant and hardy. Great for border plantings, hanging baskets, container plantings, cascading over rocks.

 

 

 

Gerbera (Gerbera Daisy) Large bright daisies top lush green foliage all summer long. Gerberas grow in full sun on the coast to part shade inland. Likes sandy well-drained soil  with good drainage. Excellent in containers, and as a colorful bedding plant.

 

 

Daylily (Hemerocallis) Large, colorful trumpet flowers on tall stems bloom from May to September. Full sun, great for mass plantings, borders and rock gardens.

 

 

 

Ivy Geranium (Pelargonium) Colorful showy blooms in Spring and Summer. Fast growing in full-sun or part shade. Use as a perennial groundcover or in hanging baskets. Will cascade over rocks and walls.

 

 

 

Feathery Lavender (Lavandula multifida) Purple flowers in Spring and Summer. Full sun, very drought tolerant. Use for potpourri, dried flower arrangements. Aromatic foliage.

 

 

 

 

Osteospermum (African Daisy) Daisy- like flowers on dark foliage. Very durable, dependable bloomer for full sun locations. A reliable choice for border plantings, containers and rock gardens.

 

 

Ipomoea Beautiful foliage color, good for accenting flower colors of companion plants. Great for full to part-sun container plantings such as window boxes, hanging baskets and patio plantings. Likes well-drained soil, and even watering, especially in hot weather.




Scabiosa (Pincushion Flower) Long-blooming blue summer flowers that attract butterflies. Likes full sun to part shade, low water requirement. Good cut flower (and seed capsule), great for foreground color accents in mass plantings.

 

 

Scaevola (Fan Flower) Lavender-blue blooms almost year-round. Full sun to part shade. Fast growing perennial groundcover, can be used cascading in hanging baskets, perennial gardens and planters.

 

 

Tulbaghia violacea (Society Garlic) Lavender- Pink Flower spikes year-round. Full sun to part shade. Insect and gopher resistant. Use as a border in any soil condition, flowers are used as a garnish, leaves can be used for cooking.

 

 

Kangaroo Paw (Anigozanthos Hybrids) Blooms Spring thru Fall with spikes of fuzzy, tubular flowers. Flowers attract butterflies. Use in full sun as a cut flower, smaller varieties are great container plants. Grows well under Eucalyptus.

 


 

Fortnight Lily (Moraea iriodes) White flowers with orange blotch, bloom at 2 week intervals in early Spring. Grows in full-sun and tolerates wet or dry soils. Great near swimming pools.

 

 

 

Santa Barbara Daisy (Erigeron karvinskianus) Small white Daisy flowers year-round. Grows in full-sun to part shade, up to 10” tall. Use as a drought tolerant groundcover in small planters, in rock gardens or as a cascading perennial.

 

Cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum) Bright showy blooms on 6” to 8” stems from January to May. Grows in full sun close to the coast, needs part shade inland. Often used as a winter annual in full sun or shade. Can go dormant in hot summers and return the following Winter.
